No. 37 - The Other Side

We followed the sound

As a hum into a roar,

Water poured

Off that great precipice

Dissipating in mist above

And lake below.

Coming around that abyss

We dared to scale the cliff,

Not for knowledge of what lay beyond it,

But if only to feel

The river rushing

Past our fingertips.

The slick climb was made carefully,

A spot secured, and a view to see.

I caught my breath and arm outstretched

Tentatively put my open hand in

The breach of earth and sky,

My palm collecting a fortune of sunlight.

But as I reached,

I saw something.

A hand that mirrored mine.

In disbelief,

I paused fearing

Life on the other side.

As I withdrew,

The hand did, too

Respecting me in fright.

But wonder got the best of me

And I leaned in with my eyes.

Too dark to see,

The hand mirroring

Came through, as so did mine.

Looking at you,

I nodded too

grateful to walk beside.

You smiled in trust

Knowing I must

See what lay behind.

I breathed again

And took the hand’s

Mysterious invite.

It pulled me through

That wall of blue

So hidden from the light.

I gasped for air

Till standing there

I saw things from the other side.
